Cantor Roslyn Barak has served
Congregation Emanu-El of San
Francisco since 1987. Prior to her
position in San Francisco, she was
Cantor of Temple Isaiah of Forest
Hills, New York. Before entering
cantorial school, she was an opera
and concert singer, performing
throughout the United States and
Israel with organizations such as the
Santa Fe Opera, the Israel National
Opera, the Jerusalem Symphony,
and the Israel Philharmonic. Cantor
Barak also received numerous vocal awards and honors,
including the Liederkranz Award and the Katherine Long
Scholarship of the Metropolitan Opera Studio. More recently,
she has toured Germany several times in conjunction with
the release of her CD, "The Jewish Soul", and is now featured
on a CD of music of Samuel Adler produced by the Milken
Archives of American Jewish Music. Other recordings
include "Libi B'Ma'arav" (music of Jewish composers of the
Western U.S.), "A Sho in Gan Eden" (Zamir Chorale), and
"Hallel v'Zimrah" (music of Congregation Emanu-El). A
graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and the Hebrew
Union College/School of Sacred Music, Cantor Barak has
served on the faculty of the Academy of Jewish Religion in Los
Angeles, and has given master classes and scholar-in-residence
sessions in North America and Israel. Cantor Barak currently
serves on the Board of the American Conference of Cantors,
and is a member of the Cantors Assembly. She recently
completed her appointment to the Editorial Committee of
the Central Conference of American Rabbis, for the new
Reform prayerbook, Mishkan Tefillah. Cantor Barak also holds
a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology.
