General Contributions
Contributions to this Fund are used where the need is greatest at the Temple.
Altar Floral Fund
This Fund is used by the Floral Committee to purchase flowers for the bimah in the Main Sanctuary and the Martin Meyer Sanctuary, and for plants for the Rabbi Joseph Asher Courtyard.
Ludwig Altman Organ Fund
Ludwig Altman served as organist and choir director for Congregation Emanu-El from 1937 until 1986. The income from this Fund, established by his wife Emmy to honor his memory, provides for music programs and maintenance work on the Temple's organs.
The Annual Giving Program of Congregation Emanu-El
Annual Giving enables the congregation to provide a variety of worship opportunities, outstanding child and adult education programs and highly innovative community and social action programs.
Rabbi Joseph Asher Lecture Fund
Rabbi Asher served as Congregation Emanu-El's Senior Rabbi from 1968-1985. This fund, which honors his memory as a scholar and a humanitarian, sponsors an annual lecture at Emanu-El.
Building Preservation Fund
This Fund ensures that our sanctuaries and Temple House remain in good repair and endure for future generations as a beautiful house of worship, study and assembly. This Fund is used for the preservation of our buildings, renovation, and preventative maintenance and equipment requirements.
Campership Fund
The Campership Fund provides scholarships for children who need financial assistance to attend Jewish camp programs.
Cantor's Music Fund
This Fund supports the Congregation's music programs and is used for charitable giving at the Cantor's discretion.
Caring Community Fund
The Caring Community Fund of Congregation Emanu-El provides funds which serves our temple families by offering care and support to congregants who are ill, homebound, in mourning, or returning home with a new baby.
Muriel R. Cohn Memorial Confirmation Class Picture Fund
Muriel R. Cohn was an institution at Congregation Emanu-El; teacher, secretary, friend. Her family and friends honored her by establishing a fund to provide for the preservation of Confirmation Class photographs.
Harold Dobbs Early Childhood Education Scholarship Fund
The family of Harold S. Dobbs, who have a long history of participation in and contributions to Congregation Emanu-El and the Jewish Community, established the Harold Dobbs Early Childhood Education Scholarship Fund to support Emanu-El's preschool and early childhood programs.
Emanu-El Community Service Fund
The purpose of this fund is to promote and support social action and community service programs in the greater Bay Area, particularly those that have an ongoing impact on social service needs and that encourage giving and volunteerism in partnership with the temple
Emanu-El Endowment Fund
This Fund secures the congregation's significant and growing program needs while ensuring the Congregation's financial future. It enables the congregation to maintain its commitment to future generations of Jews in the greater Bay Area by building a strong and dynamic Reform Jewish community.
Emanu-El Neighborhood Food Pantry
The Emanu-El Food Pantry is part of the San Francisco Food Bank Neighborhood Grocery Network. It offers free groceries to the food insecure: those at risk of going hungry in the surrounding neighborhood. Donations help to off-set the weekly ongoing costs to operate the Panty.
Emanu-El Preschool Fund
This Fund provides tuition scholarships for children attending the Preschool, staff development workshops, parent education meetings, and enrichment specialists and special equipment for the Preschool.
Emanu-El Program Endowment Fund
This Fund enables participation in lifelong enrichment programs, programs for singles, seniors, havurot and other family activities, and attract and involve Jews who do not currently belong to a synagogue. The Fund also provides for guest lecturers, scholars, educators and performers.
Elizabeth S. & Alvin I. Fine Museum Fund
Established in 1973 by Rabbi Fine in memory of his wife, the Fund provides for the acquisition and preservation of rare documents, ceremonial objects and Jewish art. In addition, it provides for exhibits in the Elizabeth S. & Alvin I. Fine Museum of Temple Emanu-El by well-known Jewish artists.
Fannie & Walter Freudenthal Fund
Established by the Freudenthals, teachers in our Religious School, this Fund provides scholarships for religious education to children who are members but cannot afford religious education fees.
Lawrence D. & F. Richard Friedman Program Fund
This fund, established by Joseph and Mollie Friedman in memory of their sons, provides for youth and family education programs for the Congregation.
Friends of Emanu-El
Friends of Emanu-El was established in response to inquiries from visitors to our Congregation who enjoy the beauty of the Temple, our worship services and our many social and education programs. The funds are used for the general operations of the congregation.
Rhoda H. Goldman Fund
This Fund supports the development and growth of lay leadership with emphasis on the Leadership Emanu-El Program. Established in memory of Rhoda H. Goldman, President of the Congregation from 1991-1993, the Leadership Emanu-El Program is a living testimony to Rhoda Goldman's qualities of vision, compassion, and dedication to the Jewish community.
Regina B. Goldstine Faculty Fund
Regina B. Goldstine served as a teacher and librarian for Emanu-El's Religious School for 50 years. This fund supports annual awards given to outstanding teachers of the Youth and Family Education Program.
Elliot Grafman Student Internship Fund
Rabbi L. Elliot Grafman served the Congregation as an interim rabbi and teacher. This Fund provides internships for travel and study in Israel for students participating in religious education.
Hans and Elizabeth (Libby) Gronowski Preschool Fund
Libby Gronowski was a beloved member of the Congregation Emanu-El family with a lifetime interest in helping the less fortunate. To honor her memory, her family established the Elizabeth (Libby) Gronowski Preschool Fund to provide scholarships for the Congregation Emanu-El Preschool.
Jean G. Hartman Music Endowment Fund
Jean G. Hartman was a lifetime member of the Congregation. This Fund is used to present an Annual Concert, to commission new musical works by Jewish composers, and to share and preserve such works.
Herzstein Family Fund for Music & Art (In memory of Albert & Ethel Herzstein, Sadie Herzstein Smith, and Leonard & Adele Herzstein)
Established by Mortimer and Rene Herzstein, this Fund enriches the educational and cultural activities of the Congregation by providing for art programs and presentations, music programs, the commissioning of new works and performances that enhance the Congregation.
Daniel Hone Confirmand Fund
Daniel Hone was an Emanu-El Religious School principal and Board of Directors member. This Fund annually awards an Israeli menorah to the outstanding member of the Confirmation Class.
Golda & Harold J. Kaufman Family Teen Leadership Program Fund
Established by longtime members, the late Golda and Hank Kaufman, this fund provides monies for our youth to take part in a variety of leadership and enrichment programs.
Daniel E. Koshland Memorial Lecture Fund
Daniel E. Koshland was a humanitarian, philanthropist, and a congregational leader. This Fund, established to honor his memory, provides for an annual lecture at Temple Emanu-El by a Jewish Scholar.
Leadership Circle
Leadership Circle contributions are gifts made to the Annual Giving Fund at the $1,000 or more level. In addition, donors who make a commitment to contribute $250 per year for four years to the Annual Giving Fund are "Honored Menschen" Leadership Circle members.
Robert C. Levy Prayerbook Fund
This Fund, established by Marian Levy to honor the memory of her husband, provides for the purchase of prayerbooks and Torah commentaries for the Congregation.
Paul J. Matzger Young Adult Fund
This fund was created to honor the memory of Paul J. Matzger, President of the Congregation from 1993-1996. This fund supports programs for the Young Adult Community including leadership training, an annual lecture, and other events.
MAZON (A Jewish Response to Hunger)
Contributions to this Fund are forwarded on a regular basis to MAZON, an organization that allocates funds nationally and internationally to established agencies with proven track records in the battle against hunger.
The Charles Michael Lecture Endowment Fund
This fund has been established by congregant Charles Michael to support in perpetuity an annual lecture.
Joseph & Ethel Pincus Family Fund for Jewish Education & Art
This Fund, established in memory of Joseph Pincus, enhances Jewish Education and Arts by offering scholarships and developing programs that further the artistic learning process.
Shirley & Herman Pollock Scholarship Fund
Shirley Pollock and her late husband Herman Pollock were temple educators. The income from this Fund is used to provide special scholarships for Religious School students to attend programs outside of Congregation Emanu-El. All scholarship recipients are required to complete a Tzedakah project.
Cantor Joseph L. Portnoy Fund
Cantor Portnoy served the Congregation from 1959-1986 and is the Cantor Emeritus. This Fund, named to honor his dedication and service, has provided for a Religious Education Teacher Resource Center.
Rabbis' Fund
The clergy and senior staff uses this Fund for philanthropic projects. The recipients include qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, stipends for Youth Education programs such as special teacher training and the Maccabee Games, and for attendance at community charitable events. All disbursements are in accordance with guidelines established by the Central Conference of American Rabbis, American Conference of Cantors, and the National Association of Temple Administrators.
Religious Education Endowment Fund
Established by the Board of Directors in March 1993, this Fund provides for scholarships, age appropriate teaching materials, art supplies and field trips all to enhance the quality and depth of our religious education programs now and in the future.
Ludwig & Rebecca Rosenstein Adult Education Fund
Ludwig Rosenstein was a leader of the Emanu-El Institute of Jewish Studies established in 1962. The Fund sponsors a variety of adult education events such as the Shabbat Lunch and Learn program.
Madeleine Haas Russell Institute of Jewish Learning
The Columbia Foundation awarded a grant to Congregation Emanu-El to establish the Madeleine Haas Russell Institute of Jewish Learning, a center for adult education at Temple Emanu-El. An additional grant was received from the Gaia Fund. The income from this fund is used to enhance the level of Jewish learning not only for the members of Emanu-El, but for the whole community.
The Pam Schneider Preschool Staff Development Fund
This Fund honors Pam Schneider, the founding Director of the Temple Emanu-El Preschool. The Fund ensures that our teachers have the best continuing education in order to provide the best educational enrichment for our students.
Drs. Ben & A. Jess Shenson Music Fund
Drs. Ben and A. Jess Shenson established this Fund in memory of their parents, Rose and Louis. The Fund's ongoing purpose is to support the Congregation's music programs, including the Shenson Memorial Concert, and provide for restoration and preservation work on our Temple's organs.
Sisterhood Transportation Fund
The Sisterhood Transportation Fund has been established to help meet the transportation needs of Temple members for the Holy High Days, Shabbat services, and special events and programs.
Sylvia Stone Hospitality Fund
This Fund was established to honor the memory of Sylvia Stone by helping to make the Temple a welcoming place for its members. The Fund provides in part for the weekly Shabbat Kiddush and for other congregational receptions.
The Richard L. Swig Membership Services Fund
This Fund was established by Rick and Darian Swig, to honor the memory of Richard L. Swig. The Fund enables the Congregation to offer reduced membership dues to existing members on an as-need basis, and assists in funding a staff position to work with members to enhance their relationship with the Congregation.
Laszlo N. Tauber Judaic Studies Program of Congregation Emanu-El
This Fund supports the Tauber Judaic Studies Program, under the auspices of the Madeleine Haas Russell Institute of Jewish Learning of Congregation Emanu-El. The Program includes a curriculum through which adult participants can achieve a deep understanding in particular areas of interest and an excellent general education in Jewish subjects.
Jane & Allan Unger Family Fund
This Fund, created by Jane and Allan Unger, was inspired by a sermon given by Rabbi Pearce. The purpose of the Fund is to enhance the ability of the synagogue to remain open and welcoming to all.
Arthur G. Weiser Fund for Ecumenical Understanding
Established by the Weiser Family Foundation to honor the memory of the late Arthur G. Weiser, M.D., this Fund enables Congregation Emanu-El to host an annual symposium on topics of particular concern to Bay Area clergy. Clergy from all faiths will be invited to a day of inspiring study with a major figure in the ecumenical world.
Voorsanger Library Fund
Named for Rabbi Jacob Voorsanger, the Fund supports the purchasing, cataloging and maintenance of the Voorsanger Library's holdings.
Youth Education Fund
This Fund is used for special programming and materials in the Youth and Family Education Programs.
Jennie Baruh Zellerbach & Harold Zellerbach Cultural and Education Fund
Established by Harold Zellerbach in memory of his mother, the income from this Fund is used to support music and cultural programs of the Congregation.
