Bay Area Volunteer Opportunities: Please download this listing of community-wide volunteer activities for all ages.

Habitat for Humanity: This is our 4th year working with Habitat for Humanity. It is the first project that fills up during Mitzvah Day each year. Our congregants and clergy have participated in their low income building projects throughout the year. This year we are co-sponsors of their Interfaith Housing Project. Our project partner is the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Francisco.

Head Start Projects: Each spring we provide school supplies for several hundred Head Start students who don't have the necessary school supplies for their school or home work. This project is centered in our religious school and our pre-school where our students work on this hands on mitzvah to help other students to be successful in school.

Jewish Family and Childrens Services Tenderloin Outreach Shabbat Program: The Tenderloin Outreach program serves a monthly shabbat meal to the elderly Jews living in the Tenderloin combined with a shabbat service. Our volunteers help to serve food and meet and greet the Seniors.

Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly: Each year our Mitzvah Corps program works with Little Brothers to visit homebound elderly around the city. Our 7th graders create gifts and cards to deliver during these visits. In addition, each Thanksgiving and Christmas, volunteers work at the Temple to put together meals and gifts for delivery to the over 1000 elderly clients that this agency serves around San Francisco.

Mitzvah Partners Projects with Jewish Family and Children's Services: Mitzvah Partners is our ongoing partnership with JFCS programs that gives us the opportunity to help members of the Jewish community in need. We deliver food and gift baskets, go on home visits, welcome new emigre families and help to make the Jewish holidays more joyful for those living alone, with illness or who are new to this country.

SF Interfaith Council-Winter Shelter Program: We have participated for many years in this program which opens congregations during the winter months to house and feed homeless men in the city. In the Winter of 2001 we cooked and served 7 nights of meals. Over 100 volunteers participated to help provide for the homeless.

7th Grade Mitzvah Corps: The 7th Grade curriculum of the congregation is based on a social action program that brings the students into the community for monthly projects that include: The Peah Garden, political rallies, Walk for the Blind, SF Food Bank, Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly, hospital visits, visits to our homebound elderly and homeless shelter dinners.

Young Adult Projects: Our young adults are very involved in many different projects that go on in and out of the Temple. If you want to connect with this very active group, contact Mollie Schneider, the Director of Young Adult Programs, at mschneider@emanuelsf.org or (415)751-2541 x 124
