OTHER PROJECTS

TEAM EMANU-EL 2009
On August 30, 2009, over 50 congregants participated in Emanu-El's first metric Century and Chai bike ride. Lead by Rabbis Sydney Mintz and Ryan Bauer, congregants gathered at the synagogue for breakfast before heading out on their designated routes. Over 20 additional congregants volunteered to assist the riders in numerous ways: laying arrows along both routes, massage, serving food at rest stops, health care professionals and cheerleaders! This event reminded people why Congregation Emanu-El is so special. Community was built. Healthy bodies and spirits were connected. Participants were so inspired that discussions are already in the works for doubling participants for our 2010 event! Stay tuned!

THE JEWISH HOME WANTS YOU TO VOLUNTEER!
The newly expanded Jewish Home located at 302 Silver Avenue is a
non-profit, state-of-the art residential community dedicated to the
care of 430 residents. The Jewish Home provides a comprehensive
range of personal and health care services for the nearly selfsufficient
to the totally dependent, disabled elder.
For over 130 years, the Jewish Home has been on the cutting edge
of geriatric care, priding itself for a tradition of superior medical
care within a warm and dignified Jewish environment regardless
of one's ability to pay. Many of the Home's programs would be
enhanced by the vibrant assistance of our congregants. Volunteers
can come individually, with their families, or in small groups.

THE ADOPT-A-GRANDPARENT PROGRAM
Congregation Emanu-El seeks to enhance the lives of seniors
through the companionship and compassion of teen volunteers
who want to make a difference and bring joy into someone else's
life, giving one-to-one attention and engaging conversation,
looking at pictures, and playing cards or board games.
Simultaneously, the teen learns social skills when interacting with
older adults, benefits from a senior's life-lessons and stories and
fills a large gap by having a "grandparent" around!
Location: Rhoda Goldman Plaza, 2180 Post Street, San Francisco
Time Commitment: One hour per week for eight weeks
All youth 12 years of age and older are encouraged to sign up.
Community service hours are awarded.

FOSTER PARENTING IS THE ULTIMATE IN VOLUNTEERING
Think about what you can do to help foster a child.
Children often enter foster care with nothing more than a garbage bag containing the few clothes they can actually call their own. It’s a sad fact that local foster kids often lack the most basic clothing, books, toys and shoes, items other children take for granted.
Do you have anything on this list?
Please buy on sale, search yourclosets, and bring in as many items to donate as you can. From newborns up to age 18. Don't forget the older children who can be adult size
- New clothes in a box or bag

- New toys, especially dolls with homes like Polly Pockets and Legos

- Games, DVDs, books, and craft supplies

- New stuffed animals

- Baby equipment– swings, high chairs, cribs, monitors, car seats, etc. new or gently used (no used mattresses)

- New children's towel sets, blankets, and crib sheets

- Children's furniture– beds, bedroom sets, study lamps, etc. gently used are okay (no used mattresses)

- Recreational equipment– trycicles, bicycles, helmets, locks, scooters, and skates (very gently used are okay)

- School supplies and backpacks

- Camp supplies– swimsuit, flashlight, sleeping bag
Put it in the bassinet.
A bassinet will be located near the front office of the temple. For large items, let a member of the staff know and special arrangements will be made. A donation receipt will be provided.
The donated items will be distributed to the neediest through, Help One Child, http://www.helponechild.org. Help One Child is a non-profit, non-denominational, local outreach to at-risk children in the foster care system.
THE CHILDREN ARE COUNTING ON YOU
Acknowledgements: This donation drive was suggested and spurred on by our member Phyllis Fullmer, past Sisterhood President, who, along with her husband Jack, is the former foster parent of over 17 children. Thank you, Phyllis for allowing all of us to offer a hand to those less fortunate. If you would like to become more involved in this effort, contact Phyllis at: melsarz@att.net
