Israel Update is a periodic discussion of current events and issues relating to modern-day Israel, providing context and analysis that go behind the headlines. The programs are at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, 3200 California St. at Presidio Ave.

In the year 2006/2007 there will be at least seven programs, beginning in October. The confirmed programs are listed below and more details will be available through the Israel Action Committee and the co-sponsoring organizations.

October 4, 2006, 7:30 at JCCSF: Yael Dayan will speak about the reality of war and the quest for peace over four generations in Israel. Beginning in the '92 elections Ms. Dayan served three terms as Labor Party Member of Knesset. She is a recognized leader in Israel public service and is the author of eight books.

December 6, 2006, 7:30 at JCCSF: Dr. Reuven Pedatzur is a senior lecturer in several universities around Israel and is a researcher for the Center to the Strategic Studies of Tel Aviv University,. He has a column about security and strategy in Haaretz news paper and is a commentator in the subjects of security and strategy in different medias. He is a former combat pilot and an expert on the topic of Iran's nuclear weapon.

Congregation Emanu-El's Israel Action Committee (IAC) is entering its fifth year. In the past three years, we have joined forces to create a community-wide program called Israel Update.

The IAC is virtual, with generally no meetings, but instead provides a forum for distributing action ideas, gathering together the people who will turn the idea into an action plan, and then calling the Congregation's attention to act together. We are soliciting ideas that YOU can do: hands-on activities on behalf of our sisters and brothers in Israel. We welcome your ideas.

Israel Update consists of programs with periodic discussions of current events and issues relating to modern-day Israel, providing context and analysis that goes behind the headlines. The programs are generally on the first Wednesday of each month and begin at 7:30 pm at the Jewish Community Center San Francisco. There is a nominal charge for most events.

Israel Update is co-sponsored with the Taube Center for Jewish Life at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, Jewish Community Relations Council, and the Israel Center.
