Musical Groups of Emanu-El
Saturday morning services in the Main Sanctuary are infused with great beauty and awe due to the contribution of our professional choir. Mimi Ruiz, Gail MacGowan, Christa Pfeiffer, Linda Liebschutz, Sigmund Seigel, Dale Richard and Tom Hart have been with us for many years, lending such dignity and warmth to our worship. They are well known in the Bay Area for their vocal talents, and we are proud to have them with us each week, under Rod Gehrke’s expert guidance.
On the High Holy Days, these singers are joined by another seven professionals to form a choir that is unparalleled nearly anywhere in the country. It is truly a privilege to hear them each year as they elevate the worship experience to great heights and inspire us.
The temple’s adult volunteer choir, Kol Emanu-El (“the voice of Emanu-El”) was formed in 1992 and has continued to enhance our worship services once a month. Under the direction of Cantor Roslyn Barak and Rodney Gehrke, the choir presents a wide range of musical styles with varying degrees of choral difficulty. The congregation is always encouraged to join in and the choir has served as a catalyst for congregational participation. Our volunteer singers have many opportunities as well to appear as soloists, and they do so with great enthusiasm and joy. Kol Emanu-El has performed in the wider interfaith community on occasion, and has distinguished itself nobly at these events.
