Adolescent Education

Madrichim Teen Teacher Training Program and (NEW) Shira Leading Program

Madrichim is a weekly class for students in grades 8 and 9 who are interested in learning to teach in our Youth and Family Education program.  Madrichim attend classes in which they learn about child development, classroom management, learning and teaching styles, lesson planning and implementation and deepen their Judaic knowledge.   They also spend time observing what is going on in our Youth and Family Education classrooms.

(NEW OPTION) Shira Leader Training is also a weekly class for students in grades 8-11 who are interested in becoming song leaders in our Youth and Family Education program.  A prerequisite for this course is that students play an instrument that they can song lead with. In general that would be guitar, mandolin, ukulele, etc., or it could be a hand drum. Whatever the instrument, the student would need to bring their own instrument and be comfortable leading singing while playing it.

Taught by Cantor Marsha Attie, students will learn the basics of song leading together. This will include learning some Jewish music repertoire, and studying all the components that make a song session successful. This includes how to teach a song, how to connect with your audience, how to choose the right song and keys they should be sung in. The students will have direct experience practicing with classes on Sunday mornings as well as time to debrief and reflect on the learning opportunities in each of these sessions. Shira students will also spend a portion of the year learning with the Madrichim students about the basics of classroom management, child development and learning styles.

Madrichim and Shira are full-year, weekly commitments.  Both classes meet on Sunday mornings during regular Youth and Family Education sessions.  Students who complete the programs will be eligible to become paid teachers in our program for the 2015-2016 school year.  Completing the programs includes regular weekly attendance (make up sessions are required for excessive absences), preparing and teaching a lesson and demonstrating competence in the content areas presented.

Madrichim and Shira are leadership-training programs for teens who desire to work closely with younger children in a Jewish environment.  Both are good preparation for summer camp counseling jobs as well as future employment in religious schools.

There is an additional fee of $200 for the Madrichim and Shira Leading Programs and students must be enrolled in and regularly attend The Emanu-El Fellowship program.  If you are interested, please complete the application and send it back with a check made out to “Temple Emanu-El Madrichim/Shira Program”.  If participation in the program(s) does not work out, the check will be returned to you.
