EMANU-EL'S YEARLY MUSICAL OFFERINGS
THE LUDWIG ALTMAN MEMORIAL CONCERT: an annual concert in the late autumn
to pay tribute to the memory of EMANU-EL's longtime organist and choir
director, Ludwig Altman. In recent years we have presented the San
Francisco State University Chorus and the Handel Oratorio Orchestra in a
performance of "Judas Maccabeus" (G.F. Handel), as well as the chorus and
orchestra of the University of California at Berkeley in a gala
performance of "Chichester Psalms" (Leonard Bernstein) and "Tehillim"
(Steve Reich). Organ recitals and chamber concerts are regular features
of this series.

MUSIC AT MEYER: This popular series is a spinoff of the Annual Shenson concert, sponsored for many years when the Drs. Ben and A. Jess Shenson established a music endowment fund in memory of their parents, Rose and Louis. After the passing of Dr. A. Jess Shenson, the fund produced an annual gala concert or event and dessert reception which honored the memories of the late Drs. Ben and Jess Shenson
Currently, Music at Meyer showcases the most talented, visionary musicians across genres in the intimate, acoustically superb setting of Congregation Emanu-El's 375-seat Martin Meyer Sanctuary. This seven concert series is made possible by generous grants from the Ingrid Tauber Philanthropic Fund of the Jewish Community Endowment Fund and other donations.

THE HARTMAN CONCERT: Longtime congregant Jean Hartman (z"l) established a
fund in her name to present an annual concert in the Martin Meyer
Sanctuary in the spring. Noted tenor Paul Sperry has appeared in recital
with our own Cantor Roslyn Barak, and recently the San Francisco State
Chamber Singers performed a varied and colorful program. Violinist Zina
Schiff and pianist Gilead Mishory have honored us with their talent as
well. In 2002, the Jean Hartman memorial concert featured cellist Emil Miland,
accompanied by pianist Lois Brandwynne.
Temple Emanu-El also co-sponsors many musical events in the community,
such as the Berkeley Jewish Music Festival and the San Francisco Jazz
Festival. In the past, we have presented performances of "Klezmania",
a popular Bay Area event.
