Temple Emanu-El wanted to create a Shabbat service for the young but adult Jews of San Francisco.
First of all, it had to start later in the evening (now you know the mystical formula used for naming the service "Late Shabbat").
This service had to be relevant, meaningful to worshipers in their 20s and 30s. It had to be interactive. It had to be fun.
Rabbi Sydney Mintz and her staff dreamed up something more than a weekly prayer meeting. They recruited song leader Marsha Attie and created an event that met the spiritual and social needs of Bay Area young adults - and they served beer afterwards.
People liked it. Each month more and more young adults came to pray and meet others in the community. And so it grew. It has become one of the most popular places in the Bay Area to welcome Shabbat and get together with friends.
Join us at Late Shabbat and see if it's for you. If you feel like you're getting lost in the crowd, just look for one of the Shabbat hosts (they wear name tags). They'll show you around and introduce you to people and talk about some of the other aspects of the community.
In addition to the Late Shabbat services, there are all kinds of programs and events specifically for young adults.
