The Plough and the Stars, 116 Clement Street

Unwind from your busy week and prepare for Late Shabbat by joining us at happy hour. This is a great opportunity for Late Shabbat newcomers to connect with other young adults and learn more about Congregation Emanu-El's Young Adult Community.  If you're a longtime Late Shabbat attendee, we'd love to see you there as well!  We'll be kicking things off at 5:30 pm at the Plough and Stars, conveniently located on Clement Street (close to our temple and several restaurants, for those of you who would like to get your nosh on before services). At 7:00 pm we'll depart the Plough and Stars for Emanu-El, where you'll have the opportunity to meet other YAC members at our Late Shabbat reception.   Please join us for an early evening event that will be refreshing and Jewish. Just like you.

Late Shabbat

Featuring Israel’s Ambassador to the United States: Michael B. Oren
Friday, February 12, 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Main Sanctuary, Temple Emanu-El

You’re invited to join us for this very special Late Shabbat featuring guest speaker Michael B. Oren, Israel’s ambassador to the United States.  Ambassador Oren has written extensively for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The New Republic, where he was a contributing editor. His two most recent books, Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East and Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East, 1776 to the Present, were both New York Times bestsellers. They won the Los Angeles Times’ History Book of the Year prize, a National Council of the Humanities Award, and the National Jewish Book Award.

Raised in New Jersey, Ambassador Oren moved to Israel in the 1970s. He served as an officer in the Israel Defense Forces, in the paratroopers in the Lebanon War, a liaison with the U.S. Sixth Fleet during the Gulf War, and an IDF spokesman during the Second Lebanon War and the recent Gaza operation.  He acted as an Israeli emissary to Jewish refuseniks in the Soviet Union, as an advisor to Israel’s delegation to the United Nations, and as the government’s director of Inter-Religious Affairs. He has testified before Congress and briefed the White House on Middle Eastern affairs.

Also join us as we celebrate our first Birthright Israel trip (see below), and during the oneg enjoy Israeli cuisine while participating in the MASA Israel Programs Fair.

Late Shabbat is a unique service for young adults in their 20's and 30's, led by Rabbi Sydney Mintz and Marsha Attie, with Jonathan Ferris, Eric Shoen, and Ira Levin.  All Late Shabbat services are held at 7:30 pm and are followed by a Shabbat oneg. If you are a newcomer to our community come meet other young adults for a small wine and cheese reception at 7:00 pm. This month’s services will be held in our gorgeous Main Sanctuary.

Passover Seder Matching Program

Monday, March 29, 2010

We are pleased to announce our first Young Adult Passover Seder Matching Program, which will take place on the first night of Passover, Monday, March 29, 2010. Traditionally Passover is a holy day that encourages us to host Seders in our own homes with family and friends. Even more important, our tradition calls upon us to invite Guests to our Seder. In keeping with this tradition, we are calling upon our Young Adult Community to be Seder Hosts and invite as many Seder Guests as possible. Email Mike to apply. Please indicate if you want to be a Seder Host or Seder Guest.  **The FIRM deadline to apply is Friday, March 19, 2010**

Here’s how the Seder Matching Program works: Seder Hosts are free to plan their own Seder and are encouraged to be creative. Hosts must invite at least one Seder Guest and are encouraged to welcome as many as possible. Seder Hosts are invited to a Passover planning class, Mastering the Art of Passover Preparations: Recipes for a Successful Seder, on Wednesday March 3rd, 7:00 – 9:00 PM at Temple Emanu-El.

Seder Guests will be matched, as best as possible, to a Seder that fits their needs. We ask that Seder Guests be flexible when matched with a Seder, as not all requests can be satisfied.   ** Priority registration is available for Congregation Emanu-El members**  If you are not a member, we will try our best to match you with a Seder, but it depends on the number of Seder Hosts available. If we are unable to match you, or a Seder does not fit your needs, you are welcome to attend Congregation Emanu-El’s Community Seder, on the 2nd night of Passover, on Tuesday, March 30. Registration for the Community Seder is required at www.emanuelsf.org/register

It is not too late to become a member of Congregation Emanu-El and qualify for priority registration. Email Mike for a membership packet. Membership rates start as low as $200 (that’s about 55 cents a day). You can set a payment schedule and we have a “voluntary dues” program for the first fiscal year of membership. (Ask us about other membership benefits, including High Holy Day tickets, event discounts, access to Clergy when you need, and more…)

Join a Havurah!

What is a havurah?
A havurah is a small group of people who gather to form a community, celebrate holidays, and learn more about Jewish subjects of interest. Groups meet in members' homes, or at other chosen places such as the movies, museums, or parks. Havurah members form lasting bonds by creating extended families.

Who joins a havurah?
Anyone who will enjoy connecting in a smaller group within the larger Congregation community.  Groups are arranged periodically throughout the year as applications are received.

What does a havurah provide its members?

Many different things! A havurah offers an opportunity to form an extended family that celebrates holidays, socializes, and learns new things together.

What might be the focus of a havurah?
The limit is set only by the members' imaginations!  A havurah may meet for social or cultural purposes, community service, or service to the Temple. We rely upon the ingenuity of our members to come up with unique and interesting havurah activities. The Temple staff and clergy are available to you as a resource.

Now accepting applications for the Couples Havurah, Outdoors Havurah, or Create-Your-Own. Email Mike at mamerikaner@emanuelsf.org
