UJR Service Corps/Youth Group

We would like to introduce Asher Litschwartz, our new URJ Service Corps Fellow and Youth Group Advisor.

The URJ Service Corps Fellowship is a leadership opportunity for a select group of young adults across the nation; only 35 in total. Service Corps creates an innovative partnership between the URJ’s fourteen Jewish summer camps and the URJ congregations; constructing a new model of programming that crosses traditional institutional boundaries and unites camp and congregational leadership in a shared vision of inspired engagement for our youth. With the support of a generous grant, the Union for Reform Judaism, On-Site Supervisors at local synagogues and Mentors from the URJ camps, the Service Corps Fellows work actively to recruit for camp and help reenergize the communities they serve through innovative, inspiring and immersive Jewish programming.

Through the URJ Service Corps program, Asher will apply his experience, talents, and skills to create experiential, camp-style programming for families and youth at Temple Emanu-El. He will expand this role by advising our Emanu-El Temple Youth Group (TESTY), assisting them with meaningful and fun social events to reach all of our tweens and teens.

Asher is entering his second year on staff in our Youth and Family Education program. He is a Jewish Educator and Bay Area native who has been active in the Jewish community through congregational engagement, summer camp and Hillel his entire life. Asher was one of the first campers attending Camp Newman when it opened, became a CIT and then a Rosh Eidah (unit head) - fourteen years in total. As the director of a counselor team, he knows how to encourage leadership development and personal growth in our teens. Asher is absolutely dedicated to the Jewish moral tradition and the well-being of all humanity, particularly the commitment to Tikkun Olam, repairing our often troubled world.  On a more personal note, Asher loves nature, witty jokes, and good food (let’s be honest, even mediocre food). He cares deeply about people of all backgrounds and cultures and although Judaism is his particular path, he respects and supports all pathways toward a better world.
