Contemporary Jewish Ethics: Examining Our World’s Issues from a Jewish Perspective
Come and explore all of the latest headline topics, such as going to war, reproductive rights, addiction, and even perjury, under a Jew lens. What do our sages have to say? What does Reform Responsa say? How do we navigate these challenging times while keeping our faith and tradition?
This course will be taught by Rabbi Jonathan Singer with special guests along the way.
Join Emanu-El clergy to learn about the breadth and wonder of Jewish tradition. This class is a pathway for the adult learner who wishes to discover or deepen Jewish knowledge, non-Jews who are marrying a Jewish partner, and those who are considering conversion to Judaism. Participants register for each trimester separately.

To best ensure we can provide a safe and sacred experience, please note the following:
- Advance registration is required. If for any reason you are not able to register in advance, you are still welcome to attend and we will take care of registration at the gate.
- Full vaccination status is required for those eligible when participating in our programs (including booster for those eligible). Consistent with city, state, CDC and other public health authority guidance, COVID-19 vaccines are the most important and effective tool in preventing COVID-19 disease, especially severe illness and death.
- Masking is optional at all services and events taking place inside Emanu-El or for outdoor events, including in the courtyard
- For those ineligible for vaccination, testing is required within 24 hours of the event (rapid antigen or PCR).
- Although masks are not required, we understand that many people will continue to mask for a variety of reasons. We fully support those who choose to mask and invite all in our community to act in a spirit of non-judgmental kindness as we navigate this landscape together.
- Please review our COVID-19 on-site event protocols.
- We, along with our COVID-19 Advisory Team, will continue to monitor case rates in San Francisco and other important factors and respond to the changing circumstances accordingly.
- Our services will continue to be held virtually, on our Livestream page and Facebook Live.

Why have Israeli shows like “Fauda” and “Shtitsel” captivated audiences around the world? And, how does the depiction and treatment of marginalized individuals and communities affect Israeli society?
Join us for a provocative and timely discussion with Yochai Maital, co-founder of leading Jewish podcast “Israel Story,” Ala Dakka, a Muslim Arab actor and featured actor in Season 3 of “Fauda,” and, live via Zoom, Director of TV and Film at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel, Daniel Susz.
“Israel Story,” one of the first podcasts in Israel, set out to tell the story of Israel one tale at a time. It endeavors to break free of “startup-nation “ or BDS stereotypes and complicate the narrative around Israel.
Born to a Muslim Arab family in Beersheba but raised primarily in the Jewish educational system, Ala also complicates the narrative of what it means to be Israeli. Growing up, he always felt like a bit of an impersonator wherever he went. Maybe that’s why acting came so naturally to him.
Daniel, as part of the Israel Office of Cultural Affairs, strives to promote Israeli content and creators in the American TV & film market.
Together, all three of our guests will discuss why Israeli television and cinema are so appealing to international audiences and how the stories of real people, Arab and Jews, ultra orthodox and secular Jews can teach us about relationships and society in Israel.
In short: does coexistence even exist in Israel and how can ties between communities be strengthened?
This unique, interactive, format of live conversation, including stories, and short film segments will offer you ample opportunities to ask Yochai, Ala, and Daniel questions about Israeli society.

Hebrew 101 (for beginners) with Yaffa Tygiel
Tuesday evenings on zoom: 6:30 – 8:00 pm
In this class students will study to speak basic modern Hebrew by communicating with each other, reading texts, poems & songs and writing short paragraphs in Hebrew. We will be using the book “Hebrew from Scratch”.
The course also offers a first introduction to Jewish and Israeli culture as well as the Jewish traditions, using music, food and art.
Ms. Yaffa Tygiel, a very experienced native speaking teacher, will be teaching this class in Hebrew.
Join us on our beautiful courtyard for dinner & teen-led activities at 5:00 pm. Followed by a joyful and engaging 30-minute service in Martin Meyer Sanctuary from 5:30 – 6:00 pm.
No membership required! ALL kids 6 and under, their adults and older siblings are welcome, free of charge.
