Conversation with Rabbi Sydney Mintz and Bari Weiss

Bari Weiss is a journalist and the author of “How to Fight Anti-Semitism,” which won a 2019 National Jewish Book Award and a Natan Notable Book Award. From 2017 to 2020, Bari was an opinion writer and editor at The New York Times. Before that, she was an op-ed and book review editor at The Wall Street Journal and a senior editor at Tablet Magazine.
Bari is the winner, this year, of the inaugural Per Ahlmark award in recognition of her moral courage. She is also the winner of the Reason Foundation’s 2018 Bastiat Prize, which honors writing that “best demonstrates the importance of freedom with originality, wit, and eloquence.” In 2019, Vanity Fair called Weiss the Times's "star opinion writer" and The Jerusalem Post named Bari the seventh most influential Jew in the world.

People living at the intersection of Asian and Jewish identity know a secret: there are many commonalities between the cultures which may help explain why so many Asian/Jewish couples find their beshert in each other. We invite you to make new connections, share experiences, and talk about your journey. How have you been embraced by family, friends, and various communities?
This gathering is for couples where one or both adults identify as Asian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial Asian. We welcome one or both partners, though we encourage both to attend for the full experience.
This session will be hosted by congregant-on-sabbatical and former Tzedek Council member Anthony Witte, a Chinese, French, Russian Jew. We look forward to continuing conversations about Asian/Jewish culture and experiences at Emanu-El. Please join us!

Led by congregants who identify as Jews of Color, we are convening regular gatherings of Emanu-El members who identify as Jews of Color of any race or ethnicity, to meet each other, share stories, and explore the needs and hopes of our community. The intention is to create a safe space to share thoughts and engage in conversation. We acknowledge that while this need has always existed, it has been magnified recently within our Jewish community and in the broader society at large. Emanu-El is committed to ensuring safety, equity, and justice within our community and in the wider Jewish community.
The June JoC gathering will be led by Imani Davis.
These gatherings are hosted by congregant Kristin Eriko Posner and board member Paula Pretlow.

Performing Comedians:
Aviva Siegel
Aviva is a stand-up comic by day, and a stand-up comic by night. Her jokes are silly (clown horn sound) yet personal (awooga), and she really just wants to have fun up there. She’s been nominated as one of the “Best Comedians in the Bay” by the East Bay Express, and owns a “Best Actress” trophy that she bought for herself. Her comedy’s been featured in SF Sketchfest, The All Jane Comedy Festival, The Asheville Comedy Festival, Out of Bounds Comedy Festival, UCB Comedy Originals, and Heeb Magazine.
Reena Calm
Reena Calm is a pun-slinger who (was) touring the country full time, living out of her tricked-out Prius. She started in Chicago and left on a mission to make people laugh in all 50 States, a goal she was about to complete in May of 2020. You can find her book Once A Pun A Time: Legend Of A Sighs Queen on Amazon. She's been on Doug Loves Movies, was a Comic of the Week on The Jackie & Laurie Show, opened for Arsenio Hall, and has probably headlined some bar near you, or at least slept in a nearby parking lot. Clay Newman
His comedy career began as just another way for the long-time theater nerd to get his stage fix, but he soon found that stand-up was his greatest passion and only actual skill. With his love for animals and mediocre editing prowess, you can see Clay any time on his YouTube series: The Zoo Review. Clay is a regular feature at Comedy Underground in Seattle and DNA’s Comedy Lab in Santa Cruz, as well as a regular host at Punch Line and Cobb's in San Francisco, The Improv in San Jose, Rooster T Feathers in Sunnyvale, and Punch Line in Sacramento, and showcases at Flappers in Burbank. He’s recently been seen opening for Eric Andre, Andrew Santino, Ismo, Aida Rodriguez, Sam Tripoli, Andy Woodhull, and Sheng Wang.
Ben Feldman
Ben Feldman is a standup comedian and writer based in San Francisco who works the top comedy clubs and venues throughout California and beyond. Ben was named as one of the Best Comics To Watch by SF Weekly in 2013: "With a dry wit that was praised by Robin Williams himself, Feldman brings a cool East Coast charm to Bay Area stages. From a sarcastic rant to a subtle pun, his act is clever, playful, and delightfully provocative."
Bryce Druzin
Fresh out of college and dreaming of a career in stand-up, Bryce Druzin did what most aspiring comedians from the San Francisco Bay Area do: move to Idaho, get a job in a pizza joint, and spend a year telling jokes at hookah bars for crowds of disgruntled teenagers. Eager to perform in less smoke-filled venues, Bryce did a tour of duty in Chicago before returning home to the Bay Area, where his fearless and clever jokes on race, religion, politics and pillow fights make him a favorite of most audiences – but have been known to stick in the craw of some.
