For the past few years, our 7th graders participated in the Mitzvah Corps, working in groups to cook, supervise young children on Shabbat, volunteer at St. Anthony’s, and more. Since we are currently unable to hold these in-person gatherings, we have taken the opportunity to redesign the program. Congregant, parent, and summer 2020 rabbinic intern Leo Fuchs was the driving force behind the course structure and content, and we’re very excited about what we’ve created. For this first year, both the 6th and 7th grade curricula will be the same. Next year, we will have a new program for 7th grade. As we start off the year with distance learning, here are the components:
- Weekly Sunday Zoom T’fillah with Jonathan Bayer and special guests 10:00-10:45 am.
- Weekly Sunday Zoom 7th grade classes from noon – 1:00 pm. The year has been divided into three trimesters, based on “Al Shloshah Devarim“, the three things upon which the world stands: Torah, Avodah, and Gimilut Chasidim (Torah, Prayer, and Acts of Loving kindness). Students will be divided into three groups, based on their geographical locations, and they will rotate through the three subject areas. Each trimester will consist of direct instruction, small group or partner research and study (Hevrutah), and presentations to the other members of the group. We are building in time for fun, sharing, and learning, and we hope that the whole family will participate in watching the presentations. The thinking behind the geographical groupings is that once in-person meetings can take place, you’ll already have a group close by.
- Weekly Hebrew Zoom classes on Sunday, Monday, or Thursday afternoons as well as on Tuesdays in Marin. These classes will focus on three important prayers that are included in every Jewish prayer service: The Amidah, the Aleinu and the Kaddish. In class students will not only learn to recite these prayers but they will become familiar with the choreography, where the prayers originated and the deeper meaning of the tefillah; this class is much more than just a Hebrew lesson.
