Fall 2017: Islam for Jews
Join the fabulous Professor Fred Astren of San Francisco State as he explores Islam with you.
Jews and Muslims have a long historical relationship that helped shape major aspects of Jewish identity. In recent history this relationship has been mediated by Zionism, the Arab-Israeli conflict, Arab nationalism, and Muslim fundamentalism. This course is designed to examine core features of the world’s second largest and fastest growing religion. What is Islam? What is the Koran? What is shari‘a law? How is Islam related to Judaism and Christianity? What is the relationship between Sunni and Shi‘ite Islam? What is militant Islam in the world today? How does Islam see itself in relation to other religions?
