INTRODUCTION TO HEBREW GRAMMAR
for people with no short-term memory and who are still fuzzy on English grammar
Four Wednesday evening, drop-in sessions
June 28, July 12, 26, August 9, / 7-8:30 pm
Pre-requisites: The Hebrew alphabet (preferably in order!).
Each session will use examples from the weekly Torah portions. Owing to the vagaries of summer plans, each session will be stand-alone.
Session 1: Basic Rules (June 28) Hukkat / Balak The alphabet. Roots. BeGeD KeFeT. The definite article. Inseparable prepositions. Finding your way around the TaNaKH (Hebrew Bible).
Session 2: Binyan Kal. (July 12) Pinhas / Mattot-Maase The simplest conjugation and the pattern on which all others are constructed. Past, future, present participle, imperative and infinitive.
Session 3: Hebrew Verbs. (July 26) Devarim / v’Etchanan The other conjugations (binyanim). How to recognize them. Irregular verbs. Session 4: Hebrew Nouns. (August 9) Ekev / Re’eh How to recognize and translate them. How to decline them. The logic behind possessive endings. How to use a Hebrew Dictionary.
