Jewish Word Wizards Of Broadway: Musical Theatre's Legendary Lyricists

Let’s explore the richness of thought, feeling, wit and whimsy of some of musical theatres most acclaimed and under-appreciated word wizards. And let’s find out why over 70% of them were Jews. In this course we’ll focus on five of these verbal virtuosos: Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin, Yip Harburg (“Over the Rainbow”, “April in Paris) . Dorothy Fields, Sheldon Harnick and Oscar Hammerstein. We ‘ll also look at how they expressed their experiences and concerns of being Jews in America through their work.
Your presenter, Bonnie Weiss, is a seasoned theatre educator, historian and writer. She teaches musical theatre appreciation for San Francisco State, U.C. Berkeley and Santa Clara University, and for professional and educational groups throughout California.
She has taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Domincan University and the Colleges of Marin and San Mateo. She has written feature stories for The Sondheim Review and Stage Directions Magazine.
