Cantor Jack Mendelson is one of the last living legends with a direct link to the “golden age” of cantorial music (1900-1950), when cantors were genuine celebrities in the American immigrant Jewish community, with their own lavish outfits, entourages, and even tabloid scandals!
Like the cantors of old, Jackie Mendelson is an institution unto himself. He is a larger than life (and uproariously funny) personality, who has also starred in the previous documentaries Deli Man and A Cantor’s Tale. (He was also my teacher and mentor during my years of cantorial training.)
You do not need to know about cantorial music, let alone about its golden age to still be captivated by the remarkable soul that is Jack Mendelson. From the musical artistry that he creates from thin air, to his jaw-droppingly hilarious commentary, and perhaps most poignantly, the deeply personal and sometimes tragic explorations from deep inside his head; they were all gifts for his students, providing us the slightest glimpse into our collective Jewish past.
