Make 'em Laugh: Great Comic Songs from the Stage and Screen
Taught by Bonnie Weiss
November 19; December 3, 10, 17 from 7:00 – 9:00pm
In this 4-part series, we'll explore the development and proliferation of the tunes that tickle our funny bones – from the scintillating – to the satiric – to the silly. We'll look at how the comedy song emerged on the stage and screen and its many permutations through the years.
Since many of the creators of these comic gems happen to be Jewish, we'll look at how their religious and cultural heritage influenced their work.
Plus, you'll view performances of these delightful ditties by such legends as Danny Kay, Fanny Brice, Eddie Cantor, Bert Lahr, Groucho Marx, and more. The series will also include patter songs, charm songs, political satires, and songs that mock the art of songwriting itself.
