Sponsor a Sunday night dinner for youth experiencing homelessness: Cook, eat, and socialize with residents of Geary House, a transitional housing program of Larkin St. Youth Services
Sunday Dinners at Geary House
Sunday evenings, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Run by the Larkin Street Youth Services G-House, a 20-bed housing program for San Francisco homeless young adults (ages 18-24, transitioning from adolescence to adulthood), provides residents tools to remove the obstacles in their life which threaten a successful transition to independent living. Emanu-El has partnered with G-House to support the youth integrating into the community by bringing volunteers on Sunday evenings to cook, eat, and build meaningful relationships with the residents.
It was a pure pleasure to be with the team at G-House on Sunday night. Like with most volunteering, I think I got more than I gave. Seeing these amazing youth how they are trying to navigate their lives was inspiring. What a privilege to be able to bring some lasagna, salad and amazing snacks to fill their bellies and have authentic conversations. It made me proud to be part of the Emanuel community.
– Emanu-El volunteer
Our youth really enjoy volunteers cooking (bringing dinners too) for them, taking time out of their busy lives and engaging in their home. As you can see our residents are amazing human beings, strong, bright and talented! It’s a beautiful thing to see different cultures, community getting together and breaking bread so to speak and filling the room with pure unconditional love and humanity. Thank you all!
On Yom Kippur Day, The Tzedek Council’s program, A Conversation with Youth Experiencing Homelessness in Our City*, brought over 200 Emanu-El community members together to discuss how we can help these youth in our city. View photos below and listen to a recording of the program here.
*The panel included:
· Inspirational youth who have experienced homelessness and are connected to Larkin Street Youth Services;
· Congregation Emanu-El’s Rabbi Jason Rodich & Rabbi Ryan Bauer
· Jeff Kositsky (moderator), Emanu-El congregant and Director of the San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing; and
· Dr. Colette Auerswald, Pediatrician and Associate Professor in Community Health Sciences at the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley. She has more than 20 years’ experience in the clinical care of marginalized youth in San Francisco.
“The Homeless discussion was quite educational and thought provoking. The young speakers and the female expert had a significant impact on our day and permanently in our hearts and minds”
“It really was inspiring to see so many people show up to talk about how to address youth homelessness in SF”
“People that I didn’t know who happened to attend were talking about it, and saying “did you go to this awesome panel, wow”
