fred astrenIslam for Jews with Prof. Fred Astren

Tuesday evenings, 7:00 – 8:30pm Oct. 17, 24, 31; Nov. 7, 14

Jews and Muslims have a long historical relationship that helped shape major aspects of Jewish identity. In recent history, this relationship has been mediated by Zionism, the Arab-Israeli conflict, Arab nationalism, and Muslim fundamentalism. This course is designed to examine core features of the world’s second largest and fastest growing religion. What is Islam? What is the Koran? What is shari‘a law? How is Islam related to Judaism and Christianity? What is the relationship between Sunni and Shi‘ite Islam? What is militant Islam in the world today? How does Islam see itself in relation to other religions?

Ethical Fitness: Money Matters with Rachel Brodie

Tuesday evenings, 7:00 – 8:30pm Oct. 17, 24, 31; Nov. 7

“Can I borrow your COSTCO card?”

“I paid next to nothing for it and everyone assumes it’s really Prada.”

“My kid downloads a lot of music without paying for it, but it’s just for his personal use.”

When it comes to business ethics even the smallest dilemmas can rapidly become overwhelmingly complex.  Whether we manage a company or are assessing the accuracy of an online review, we are expected to make decisions without much guidance. This series offers participants an opportunity to engage in discussion and delve into Jewish wisdom developed over millennia around topics such as free markets, intellectual property, and false advertising.

People of the Book – American Jewish Authors Book Group

Free, Monthly Tuesday evening meetings at the Temple, 7:00 – 9:00pm Oct 17; Nov 14; Dec 19; Jan 16; Feb 20; Mar 27; Apr 24 and May 15

What better time to start a book group than the start of the new Jewish Year?

Our focus will be on the fiction—novels and short stories—of selected Jewish American writers of the 20th and 21st centuries as they explore the tension between assimilation and tradition and the poles of alienation and belonging. Every work will also be rich in character, story, and the exploration of the human condition—the stuff that makes for great and enjoyable fiction. Be prepared for familiar and less well-known works, humor and sadness, seriousness and whimsy, and all the passions of life.

Join Debby Bloch—author, professor, and avid lifelong reader—and Rabbi Jonathan Singer for the first meeting on October 17, 2017. We will get organized, begin to explore what we mean by “Jewish American” writers and become enthused (we hope) about the works we will read and discuss this year.

adult learningTauber Beit Midrash

Free, Weekly Sunday morning study at the Temple 9:30 – 10:30 am

Led by Rabbis Lawrence Kushner, Jane Litman and Jonathan Singer with special guest speakers and presenters inserted throughout the year.

In Hebrew, “Beit” means house and the word “Midrash” comes from the root “to seek” or “to investigate.” A Beit Midrash is a house of study. Each Sunday, when religious school is in session, the Tauber Beit Midrash will offer an hour of study dealing with a specific topic or holiday. Using Talmud, Gemara or Zohar, our teachers will offer insight, discussion questions and food for thought.
