Purim 2021
Music and Mixology
Tuesday, February 23
7:00 – 8:00 pm
Purim invites us to mix things up, be a little sideways, and dive into the absurd head first. Jhos Singer is a Maggid, a musician and a mixologist, which means he is the perfect guy to dish up some Purim-spiration with you. You can expect a lively evening for adults that dives headfirst into Purim’s themes interwoven with relevant teachings, audience conversation, and, of course creative mixology. Cantor Attie will be on hand to provide music that is soul-stirring and also just plain fun. This program is free to Members and $7 for non-Members.
Purim Car-nival and Canned Food Donation
Wednesday, February 24
6:00 – 7:00 pm
Congregation Emanu-El (on Arguello Street)
Throw on a costume (entirely optional), grab a bag of canned food to donate, and join us at the “Palace Gates of Shushan” (aka the front of Emanu-El) for a lively drive-through celebration.
On Purim, it is customary to give mishloach manot (gifts of food) to those in need. Your food donations will help Jewish Family and Children’s Services meet the increased needs of families and seniors at this time. As an extra sweet treat for our community, the first 100 Members to roll through will receive a free scoop of ice cream, courtesy of SF Hometown Creamery! (A non-dairy option will be available.)
The Whole Megillah: A Reading For Adults
(with Rabbi Jonathan)
Thursday, February 25
6:00 – 9:00 pm
The night of Purim, gather for lively discussion and the opportunity to imbibe until you can’t tell the difference between Mordechai and Haman, as we journey through the entire Megillah. The book of Esther is about power, sexism, and inflated ego, which sounds strangely contemporary! To follow along, pull up “Megillah from Sefaria” by using the search string “megillah text” in Google.

A Virtual Purim Costume Parade
Although we cannot gather to celebrate Purim in person this year, we still want to see your creative disguises! Sift through your closet, imagine yourself strutting down the streets of Shushan, and email us a photo at [email protected] (with the subject line “Purim Photo”) of you and yours in your best get-ups! Please note that any photos sent may be shared on Emanu-El’s website and social media.
