Congregation Emanu-El Clergy Strongly Condemn SCOTUS Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

As we absorb the devastating news that the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, Congregation Emanu-El reaffirms Judaism’s longstanding (indeed, ancient) support for access to safe and legal abortion care. Abortion rights are a Jewish value.

Tonight, we will celebrate Pride Shabbat. The struggles for LGBTQ rights, women’s rights and reproductive freedom are all deeply linked and are core to our moral sensibilities as Reform Jews. Please join us tonight as we make space for the despair of this unconscionable ruling & what it may portend for LGBTQ rights, as well as celebrate the amazing LGBTQ struggle for equality. We are also working to host a gathering later in the summer to learn from experts about the current state of abortion rights in the wake of this decision, what action we can take as we are all so shaken by this ruling, and why abortion rights are important from a Jewish perspective. We will be in touch soon with details.

We share the below words released this morning by the National Council of Jewish Women, and we offer gratitude for our community.

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is a moral failure. It will put lives at risk. By overturning 50 years of precedent, safe and vital abortion care is now virtually inaccessible to millions of people who need it. In the weeks and months ahead, we will see the devastating impact this ruling will have on human lives.

“This egregious decision is a direct violation of both our American values and our Jewish tradition. Reversing the protections of Roe defies logic, morality, compassion and the fundamental right of all Americans to practice their religious beliefs without interference from the government.”
