Judy Batalion – Young Adult Discussion and Happy Hour
Saturday, November 6 (Location TBD)
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Join the Young Adult community for a special happy hour and discussion with Congregation Emanu-El’s Charles Michael Scholar in Residence Judy Batalion. Judy is the author of The Light of Days, which tells the story of young women resistance fighters who smuggled weapons, assassinated Nazis, and sabotaged German supply lines. (Steven Spielberg recently bought the film rights!) Join us for an outdoor happy hour in San Francisco. After you register, the exact location of the event will be sent out via email closer to November 6.
This program is made possible by the Charles Michael Endowment Fund scholar-in-residence weekend.
November 12 at Congregation Emanu-El
8pm: Schmooze / 8:30pm Service
All Bay Area 20s & 30s are invited to join us (back at Emanu-El!) for an evening of community building and incredible music (and potentially drinks, depending on current Covid protocol). If you are in your 20’s or 30’s and looking to connect to Bay Area Jewish community, this is the place for you. Bring your mask, your vax card, and your best friends!
Young Adult Movie Screening: Shiva Baby
Sunday, November 14 at Congregation Emanu-El
3:15 pm-5:45 pm
All 20s & 30s are invited to join Emanu-El’s Young Adult Community for our first movie screening in the Martin Meyer Sanctuary! We’ll be screening writer/director Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby(2020). Stick around after the film for a short, lively discussion led by the Young Adult Leadership Committee’s own Thaïs Miller. We’ll talk about Jewish humor, recent controversies over the depiction of Jewish women in US media, and the representation of contemporary Jewish ritual and LGBTQ+ Jews on screen. There might even be goodie bags full of movie theater-themed treats to take home. Bring your mask, proof of vaccination, and your best friends!
Schmoozing starts at 3:00pm, and the film starts promptly at 3:30pm.
The Amazing Technicolor Dream Hike
Sunday, November 21
Back by popular demand: we’re going on an outdoor hike! This week’s Torah portion is all about Joseph and his beautiful coat. In his honor, we’ll be exploring the colors of the city. What colors might you find? Don your brightest and most colorful outfit as we explore San Francisco for a calm group hike. We’ll walk around some of the most iconic areas of the city and capture beautiful views. Feel free to bring your camera and your best friends. All well-behaved and leashed fur babies are welcome. Attendance is capped at 20 people. Registration is required, and exact location will be sent out a few days before the hike.
If you have animal allergies, please be aware that this is a dog-inclusive event. All are welcome to bring dogs as long as they are well behaved and on a leash.
Emanu-El 30s/40s Group: A group for adults in their 30s and 40s, we regularly come together in meaningful ways to have fun, develop meaningful relationships, and deepen our Jewish identity through spiritual, educational, social, and service oriented programming. Most events are open to congregants and non-congregants, but certain events are congregant-only. For more information on events in this group contact Rachel Melman.
